Herbal Spotlight: Lemon Balm
Share
In the world of herbal remedies, certain plants stand out for their benefits and historical significance. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) has been cherished not only for its aromatic qualities but also for its impressive range of medicinal action. Our first Herbal Spotlight delves into the history, therapeutic benefits, and scientific backing behind Lemon Balm, shedding light on how this remarkable herb is harnessed in A.Vogel products to promote well-being and health.
A Stroll Through History
The journey of Melissa officinalis begins in the heart of the Mediterranean region, where it was first cultivated. The herb quickly found its place in the gardens and medicine cabinets of the Greeks and Romans, revered for its calming effects and its ability to ease the mind. Its genus name, Melissa, stems from the Greek word μέλισσα for ‘honey bee’, a nod to the plant’s ability to attract bees with its nectar-rich flowers.1
Throughout the Middle Ages, Lemon Balm was considered a valuable tool for lifting spirits and was often used in potions to promote longevity and vitality. By the 17th century, it had made its way into the gardens of Europe, endorsed by herbalists and physicians alike for its soothing properties.
Medicinal Marvels Unveiled
The medicinal properties of this herb are both versatile and gentle. Primarily known for its calming effects, the herb has been traditionally used to manage symptoms of stress and anxiety, promote sleep, and even improve digestive health.
Stress and Anxiety Relief: Lemon Balm contains compounds that have been shown to have a sedative effect, helping to reduce feelings of nervousness and anxiety.
Digestive Health: The herb has carminative properties, aiding in the relief of gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating and gas.
Sleep Support: By promoting a sense of calm, Lemon Balm can also be beneficial for those struggling with sleep disturbances, helping to foster a more restful night’s sleep.
The Science Speaks
A recent meta-analysis from 20212 reports that, “Based on meta-analysis results, lemon balm significantly improved mean anxiety and depression scores compared with the placebo (SMD: -0.98; 95% CI: -1.63 to -0.33; p = 0.003), (SMD: -0.47; 95% CI: -0.73 to -0.21; p = 0.0005) respectively, without serious side effects.” As clinicians and healthcare providers, this makes Lemon Balm an attractive choice for managing the well-being of our patients and clients.
A more recent study3 found the herb to be a, “…promising therapeutic option for the management of moderate emotional distress and/or poor sleep conditions.”
